Which side these people were on is not clear. Both sides in the Functionalism vs. Eclecticism (Aesthetics) battle "started" the war by declaring their approach to be the only valid approach to design.

Hale puts the loss of the patterned approach in favour of "use" around 1830. The overthrow of modernism he pegs on the publishing of Venturi's Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, the birth of post-moderism.
