The functionalist experiment generated a considerable backlash from end-users. This had had the dual effect of causing a mass defection from pure functionalism, a shift in the balance of power within functionalism toward a more balanced view. This view takes a wider picture of the user's needs, effectively bringing functionalism back into the mainstream of theory. It's prime idea, the absolute need of physical function has, however, left its mark on many of the designers living today, and much of the public.

Post-modernism didn't resolve the class split in the arts. It exacerbated the split.
