Similarity, predictability, familiarity, and uniformity reduce stress. They promote feelings of safety. Elements that match these patterns are restful and reposed. They are at harmony with the environment and the user. The reduction of stress can be a welcome relief, or it can produce stultifying boredom, depending on the user's current condition. These relations are equivalent whether they relate element to element, element to environment, or element to the user's past (the wider environment). That which doesn't match is foreign |
