Modular and unitary systems make use of typology to determine the role of classes of elements within the system. These element types include both types of object and types of interactions or connections. The designer checks for consistency, by testing to make sure every element can be described through the combination of elements. For the user, if the typology is understood, it can be used to guide the user through the design. The typology explains the disposition and purpose of elements through a small set of comparatively easy to understand ideas.
